This evidence-based workshop explores the emerging role of exercise professionals in supporting people using GLP-1 medications for obesity management.
Straight up - This is a rapidly moving space and there is still a lot assumed and a lot unknown.
However, as these therapies become increasingly common, as exercise professionals, I believe we need a deep understanding of the physiological, behavioural and musculoskeletal considerations that influence safe and effective exercise programming for this population. We should have an important place in the healthcare of people living with obesity, but currently - we are not yet consistently there.

From what I have learnt in my immersion in this area of healthcare for the past few years - it is complex. And honestly - if you are thinking its simply weight loss through goal setting, eating less and moving more - it aint.
This course will examine GLP-1 pharmacology, the physical and physiological impact that obesity can have on peoples lives, and how we can best help our clients with the improvement of their future health. We will also explore the special considerations as a practitioner working in this space of obesity management, including the importance of delivering compassionate and sensitive care.
Participants will also gain practical insight into musculoskeletal considerations of exercise program design, joint health and physiological tolerances, and how to align your clients goals to their health needs in a manner that will support long-term health outcomes.
Old injuries and fear of developing new ones, along with persistent pain presentations can be signfiicant barriers for exercise selection and adherence. Acknowledging and working around these issues cautiously can slowly manoever the adaptations to physiological change in a positive direction for our clients. From joint compression, to stress and shear, motion velocity, altered mechanics, footware, hernias, form, joint stability changes, to hypermobility issues - we will discuss a broad range of physical layers that need to be considered in the curation of sustainable programs.

This workshop will drawer on my dual qualifications, post grad research, ongoing scientific literature digestion, the latest information I have learnt attending a broad range of national and international meetings and conferences in the area of obesity management, pharmacology and weight management surgery; and the challenges encountered applying research into clinical application.
I hope to share what I have discovered so far working in this space, and in doing so, help improve our professional knowledge and clinical approach to this high impact health issue faced by many.
